Novels

The inspiration for my novels often comes from people I know. I always warn family and friends to be careful what they say in front of my notepad and me! But there is a common theme in my work; at the heart of each story lies a character who is not quite the same as everyone else.

In Look The World In the Eye, the protagonist has a sister called Bells, who is born with a cleft lip and palate. Bells is quirky, honest to the point of rude and loves to strike up conversations with attractive strangers in supermarkets. In You, Me and Him, the story was inspired by someone I knew who had a son with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).

My own experiences of living with Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) have certainly influenced my novels. I feel strongly that characters with disability should be represented in fiction, but I want to include them in a fun, thought-provoking and accessible way.

Finally, Monday to Friday Man: Gilly Brown is a touching heroine, and one of my favourite characters to date. I hope you fall in love with the characters as much as I have loved creating them. Even Sam in Look the World in the Eye, has some redeeming features. Let me know what you think…
